“halloween is the one time of year when a girl can dress like a total slut, and no other girls can say anything about it.”

October 27, 2008 at 2:31 am (opinion)

So Halloween is coming up, which means the temporary costume stores with their cheaply made, mass-produced, unoriginal outfits are springing up and peddling their crap.

Yes!

I realize that a lot of people have a problem with slutty halloween costumes. I’m not one of them. I don’t really think there’s anything wrong with dressing a little skanky on Halloween. Dressing up and feeling sexy can be fun, and as long as it’s your choice, there’s nothing wrong with it. I don’t find it degrading- if that’s how you want to portray yourself, have at it. If you don’t, don’t dress like that, and stop bitching.

Dressing like a skank is not hurting anyone. Obviously, if you’re going to a party with kids or something, naughty nurse is probably not the best costume idea, but if you’re going to go get wasted and party anyway, who cares?

So wear your slutty costume. Paint your face. Wear your fishnets and five inch platforms. Have another beer. It’s Halloween!

my ideal mate.

October 26, 2008 at 10:31 pm (in class journal)

Obviously, my ideal mate is someone I find physically attractive, but my opinion of physically attractive is pretty varied. I suppose that sounds bad- like I’m not discriminating or something, but the truth is, I’m really just not picky. I have also found that physical attractiveness increases exponentially as I get to know and like someone. I like to think that I’m just not shallow, but it’s possible I’m giving myself too much credit. My ideal mate is someone who makes me laugh. I love being able to have a conversation with someone, but I don’t need to talk constantly. I would like to find someone I can enjoy the silence with. I have found that a lot of times, more is said in a comfortable silence than a meaningless conversation. I would love to find someone with a similar taste in music, but that’s open for negotiation, since I appreciate most of the things I hear, although I absolutely, straight up detest country music. My ideal mate is someone relaxed and mellow. Being around high-strung people makes me nervous and uncomfortable. I can’t deal with people who are constantly in motion; I have too much appreciation for stillness. My ideal mate would be someone spontaneous and fun.

I just read this through and it seems overly generic. It’s strange- on paper, most people’s ideal mates sound so similar. I suppose it’s because all these qualities are open to interpretation and have varying degrees. Obviously, an ideal sense of humor is going to be different to different people. That’s why it’s difficult to describe your ideal mate. It’s much easier to recognize these qualities when you see them.

my room.

October 26, 2008 at 9:51 pm (Descriptive)

The first thing one would notice about my dorm room is that it’s clean. My roommate and I are both a bit obsessive about our cleaning habits. No funky smells or massive piles of dirty clothes for us. Straightening my desk and a thorough vacuming every couple of days is not too much trouble in exchange for a room that I can relax and feel comfortable in. We also try to make our room comfortable. We both decided the overhead light is too harsh, so we have plenty of lamps with softer light and we usually leave our blinds open. Both our beds are lofted with our desks underneath, so we have plenty of room for our futon. The futon faces the HD flatscreen- all about the comfort. Our room has a very mellow, relaxed feel, which really reflects our personalities, since both of us are very laid-back people.

The Pornification of a Generation

October 8, 2008 at 7:43 pm (News Opinion of the Week)

http://www.newsweek.com/id/162792

This article from Newsweek is an examination of the aspects of mainstream culture that are beginning to resemble pornography, especially as it relates to children and tweens. The author examines toys, television, and internet sites marketed to children, and their undeniable resemblance to the adult film industry. It’s an unsettling portrait of a generation disturbingly at ease with X-rated images and ideas.

There’s no denying that pornography is becoming increasingly mainstream. Kids are being exposed to sexually explicit material younger and younger. More and more toys and television are imitating sex and porn. So why are we surprised that kids are having sex earlier and earlier? Teen pregnancy and kids having sex younger are a natural consequence of our sex obsessed culture.

4: fast food restaurants do unnecessary things

October 1, 2008 at 10:57 pm (News Opinion of the Week)

This article is about fast-food company Yum Brands Inc., owner of KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s, and A&W, adding the calorie information to their menu boards in their restaurants. Yum Brands Inc. is doing this voluntarily, but in many places, such as California and New York City, posting caloric content is becoming required by law.

I think this is kind of unnecessary. When people go to fast food restaurants they know they’re not getting anything particularly healthy. If they’re really that worried about it, they should eat at home. I personally don’t want to see the calorie content- it makes me feel guilty. Knowing how many calories I’m actually eating would make me less likely to eat fast food. Posting only calories and not all the nutritional information is also kind of half-assed. The really unhealthy part of most fast food is sodium and fat content, but they’re not going to post that. This move by Yum Brands seems like it’s just a publicity thing to look like they’re being healthy. They’re not really accomplishing anything. I recognize that some people might appreciate knowing the calorie content of their food, but if they’re that worried about it, they should just look it up at home. This seems like a waste of time and resources… why don’t you take this manpower and make your food healthier instead of wasting your time telling us how bad it is?

4: Jesus Christ

October 1, 2008 at 9:35 pm (Quote of the Week)

“Do I divide and fall apart?

’cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark

And the ship went down in sight of land

And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?”

– “Jesus Christ” by Brand New

The first time I heard this song was a couple of days ago. It was released as a single, then as a track on Brand New’s most recent cd, The Devil and God are Raging Inside of me. When I initially heard it, I must not have really been listening, or I would have fallen in love with it right away, instead of waiting until I looked it up for this post. I was looking for my quote of the week… instead I found a song I will no doubt listen to constantly for weeks, if not months, and I got a miniature biblical refresher lesson tacked on the end as a bonus.

The song is about questioning and doubting god, and these lines specifically are about wondering what happens after death. I identify intensely with the questions posed in this quote because religion is something I’ve always struggled with, and I consider myself a fierce agnostic. In these lines, the singer is questioning what will happen when he dies, because the bright in his soul doesn’t hold back the dark. This is something everyone struggles with- do you believe that the good inside of you outweighs the bad? Do you believe that you are a good enough person?

The last line in particular interested me. When I first listened, I couldn’t remember who St. Thomas was. My first thought was St. Thomas performs the final judgement at the gates of heaven, but that didn’t sound right (that’s St. Peter, if you care to know). St. Thomas was a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, he came back to his disciples and showed himself, but Thomas wasn’t with them. The other disciples told him about Jesus’ ressurection, and Thomas doubted.

“So he said to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.'” John 20:25

About eight days later, Jesus showed up.

“Then He said to Thomas, ‘Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.'” John 20:27

Thomas realized it was Jesus, and pretty much lost his shit.

So the deal with Thomas was that he doubted Jesus, which is what the whole song is about. I’m not entirely sure what this story means in context of the song, except it’s supposed to draw a paralell between our doubting and Thomas’.

Anyway, I thought this quote was really intense, because these are questions I’ve been asking myself for a long time. On a side note, thanks to the Gideons for handing out those little green bibles – someone gave one to me as a joke, but I definatley used that thing today.

Here’s a link to the song, if you want to check it out (you should, cause it’s sweet)……..http://search.playlist.com/tracks/brand%20new%20jesus%20christ
